I'm a naturalist with a special interest in insects, plants, and birds.
Photography goes hand in hand with my interest in nature.  My goal is to
create simple, well-designed images that are graphically successful,
not just documentary natural history photographs.

I spend more of my time chasing butterflies than anything else. Observing
butterflies opens a window on the close relationships between plants
and insects and the ecological roles they play in different habitats.
I've written articles on butterflies for Massachusetts Butterflies and contributed
a site description to the Guide to Good Butterfly Sites in Massachusetts
(a Massachusetts Butterfly Club publication).

My butterfly pictures have appeared in American Butterflies, on the cover
pages of nature photography web sites, and in exhibit displays at the Museum
of Science (Boston). I've won photography awards in competitions sponsored
by the North American Butterfly Association and the National Wildlife Federation.
I've exhibited my photography at the Discovery Center at Silvio Conte
National Wildlife Refuge, the gallery at the U.S. Fish and Wildlife Service office
in Hadley, Massachusetts, and at two Massachusetts Audubon sites,
Boston Nature Center and Habitat Sanctuary.

Besides this web site, I'm active on the Web in two other places. I'm a moderator
at the Flora/Macro forum at Naturescapes.net. If you are a photographer,
Naturescapes is an excellent resource for image critique and information
about nature photography. For the latest about what I'm up to in the field, visit
my blog Nature Diary (tomwhelan.wordpress.com).
